Political Science and International Relations | Summer Research Program 2022
Summer Research Program aims to foster students’ research skills through participating in research projects of faculty members.
The program is not part of the regular summer school of Boğaziçi University and there will be no grade or credit gained by participating in this program. Enrolment is free. The students are responsible for their own accommodation, transportation expenses and health insurance. The dates indicated below may be flexible and you may arrange both the location of work and timing with the Project Coordinator.
To Apply: Please email a cv, an unofficial transcript and a cover letter indicating your motivation to participate in the particular project to the Project coordinator (emails provided for each project).
Deadline: Friday, June 24th, 2022
You can apply to a maximum of two projects and can participate only in one project at a time. If offered a place in both, please select one and inform the coordinators of your decision.

Project information
Project 1: The Black Lives Matter & Me Too movements on social media
Faculty member: Basak TARAKTAS (basak.taraktas@boun.edu.tr)
Description: data coding, literature review.
Prerequisites: A GPA of at least 3.00, a good command of English, no coding experience required

Project 2: Territorial Dispute and International Courts
Project Description: The project explores under which conditions states agree to take their territorial disputes to international courts such as the International Court of Justice.

Job Description:
1) collect data on which territorial dispute cases end up in international courts (primary) as opposed to bilateral negotiations
2) trace compliance record (secondary; if time allows)

Project 3: Constructive dialogues: retracing the childbirth narrative in international human rights platforms
Project description: An analysis of the practice of the UN human rights treaty bodies (views, concluding observations, general comments, summaries of constructive dialogues, summaries of general discussion days, state reports, shadow reports) on childbirth narrative(s) (re)produced by various stakeholders: i.e. states, human rights treaty bodies, civil society organisations.

Project 4: Judges, victims and experts: situating knowledge in international human rights adjudication
Project description: Literature review of critical (legal) scholarship (feminist, postcolonial and Marxist) on ‘knowledge’ in judicial proceedings.

Project 5: Environmental Social Movements: Drivers of Success and Failure
Project description: The project explores the conditions for the success and failure of environmental social movements in Turkey.

Project 6: A political ecology approach in evaluating the development agenda: The cases of Ghana and Kenya
Project Description: The project explores growth-led developmental projects in Ghana and Kenya with the aim of analysing their implications in generating or aggravating social and environmental injustices. In analyzing these projects, the project will assess the extent to which the mainstream development agenda focuses on environmental and social sustainability in the pursuit for economic sustainability.

Project description:

Project 9: Protests during Authoritarian Transformation (2007-2022)
Project Description: This project seeks to construct a data set of protest events in Turkey that were reported in selected newspapers from 2007 to 2022.

Requirements: 3rd year or above; completion of an elective course taught by Mert Arslanalp with a grade BB or above.
